re "... core investment in the Church of England." Yup, that certainly accounts for most of the baptisms in my family! Such as mine:

Child: But Mummy I don't want to be baptised!
Mother: I'm not going to write and tell my upper class friend who has graciously consented to be your godmother that you don't want to be christened! I don't want to hear any hint of such nonsense from you when the minister comes to visit this afternoon.

I learned recently that my closest cousin has two baptismal certificates from the same day. Her mother had converted to R.C. but was too ill after childbirth to fight grandmother on the proper Anglican christening in the fashionable city church. But somehow the mother arranged to get the baby baptised by the local R.C. parish priest first.

Amazing Grace, that persists in spite of our silliness!
